Bringing Back BoHo

How many of you have a feather in your hair?  Not yet, well, just wait, you will.  I have had mine for about 2 weeks now, and am ready to take it out.  I love the look, but they're everywhere! It seems the hippie/bohemian fashion scene is back in a big way.  If you're not sure what that means, there are feathers, fringe, headbands of every kind, natural colors, textures, and fabrics, and of course lots of leathers and natural stones.

I love the BoHo look.  The natural, long, often-braided hair is one of my favorite parts about it. The other thing I like is the relaxed attitude that comes along with the fashion. The look began in the 1960's with free love, drugs, anti-government everything, and friendship.  It might be time to dig into your mom's closets and find those bell bottoms and vests.

Naughty Nautical

Ok, so maybe you don't think of naughty as the perfect adjective to describe nautical style.  Nautical style has been around forever and continues to come back each year, to celebrate summer.  The American colors of red, white, and blue look adorable all gussied up with bows, stripes, and buttons.  It also gives us a way to appear retro, vintage, and a little bit pin up girl.  Here are some great examples I found.

Roller Derby Girls

I've always been interested in the whole concept of Roller Derby.  I never really understood the attraction of watching girls knock each other over railings on skates, but do like the outfits, and the tough girl concept behind it.  I did a little research and this is what I found out:

Roller Derbies were started in the 1880's and 90's as a type of race on skates for women. They then became popular again in 1935 during the Great Depression, where there were teams of two-three people.    In the 1970's, the sport got really popular and started becoming more of an entertainment "show," similar to wrestling.  The girls present an image of tough, athletic, and pretty girls on skates.

Relaxation and a Pina Colada

Well, it's been a tough week, that's for sure.  My spring break is so late this year (the end of April), then we come back and we're out for the summer on June 10.  Having summers off is one of the many reasons I love being a teacher, but it's not often I get to actually go somewhere.

I haven't been to Hawaii since 2008, and I'm dying for a trip.  It's my source of comfort and relaxation and I'm seriously thinking I need a trip.

I got side swiped yesterday, and am not looking forward to getting my car fixed.  I also decided to push my novel release date back to May 6, if you noticed the counter on my sidebar.  I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to get everything done, and wanted to enjoy the process.  I hope to make it great so some of you want to buy it!  Hope you all have a great weekend friends.  In the meantime, what's your favorite vacation spot where you can just RELAX?

First Fashion Friday's Tory Burch

Oprah recently called her "the next big thing in fashion."  Her website hit 8 million hits that day.  She was born in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1967.  She majored in Art History, but never used her degree.  She worked for lines like Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang, but never designed clothes.  Who is she?  Famed designer, Tory Burch of course.

So how did a girl who didn't major in fashion, and never designed clothing start her own clothing line?  She knew what she wanted to do and went for it.  In 2004, she started her own line, with tunics and the famous "Reva" flat.  Once she appeared on the Oprah show in 2005, success was only natural.

According to the Los Angeles Times, by 2008, 300,000 pairs of her signature flat had been sold.  She is an example of how to live the American Dream, that's for sure.  Her annual sales are around $200 million.
