My mother's favorite books as a child were those in the Nancy Drew series. Because of this, I have often had a special place in my heart for them. The Nancy Drew series was written by Carolyn Keene. What many of you might not know is that Carolyn Keene was just a pseudonym. There was no such person. The books were actually created by many different people, including Edward Stratemeyer, who owned Syndicate Publishing, Mildred Wirt, and Harriet Adams (the daughter of the two).
I think the appeal of the series gets a little lost when one finds out it was not just one woman writer. I always imagined her sitting in her room, as I do when I write, coming up with these fantastic crime stories. The stories are still wonderful, though, so I guess it doesn't matter whose mind they come from.
The movie Nancy Drew came out in 2007 and starred Emma Roberts, Julia Roberts niece. I think she is just adorable. The movie is a little cheesy, but I love it just the same. Here are some pics of her, her in the film, and a Nancy Drew cover. I hope you have a fabulous Saturday lovelies!

I never knew that about the books!! I used to read them and just took it for granted that Carolyn Keene was a real woman. Just crazy!! Great post!
I just adored those books.I dont know what even happened to them.I wish I could get my hands on some today.She was my favorite.My friends and I when I was about 8 used to read these all the time.Thanks for bring some happy special memories back.Enjoy the weekend!
Nancy Drew were some of my favorite childhood books as well. I loved all of those mystery books (Hardy Boys and Bobsy Twins)!
I'll have to find the movie though, I didn't realize there was one.

You know, I still love reading Nancy Drew every once and a while. It brings me back to my younger years, where my imagination had no limit. I used to run around with skirts and blouses on, magnifying glass, notebook... all trying to emulate Nancy Drew. Awesome post!
I grew up on Nancy Drew but quickly moved up. It was hard when I thought I was smarter than the detective.. haha. You have a wonderful blog here.

I loved Nancy Drew, too. I actually still have several of my old hardcover books, and I adored the artwork on the covers. Reading them these days is a lot of fun...Nancy and all her "gay" friends...so many words used back then have such different conotations now!
I wasn't a devoted fan, but I was a fan, so I wanted to see the movie! And when I did I loved Emma R. as Nancy, she is precious. I love the way they cleverly worked in that Nancy should wear vintage inspired clothing! Cuteness defined.

I have a few of the books and love em. They still write the new versions to this day so I didn't know what the stink was about regarding the movie. I loved it! It reminded me of sleuthing about the black dahlia murder. Did you know a sequel with Emma is already in the works? Can't Wait!
I loved Nancy Drew! And am kind of sad my boys probably will not want to read them...sigh.

Ah!!! I love Nancy Drew!!! I still have all of my books from my childhood. I doubt my boys will ever be interested in reading them (will have to go buy some Hardy Boys) but I will never get rid of them! That's pretty interesting that it was not just one writer!
Nancy was great, but the Cherry Ames series was my favorite!
