Hollywood Landmark: The Brown Derby Restaurant

The Brown Derby was a restaurant visited by all of Hollywood's elite. There are many photos of stars eating in the famed booths, under the caricature pictures of themselves. Executives and stars dined here regularly. The Derby in Hollywood was one of four and the second to be built.

"On Valentine's Day, 1929, The Hollywood Brown Derby opened in a building specially designed for Cecil B. DeMille near the corner of Hollywood and Vine. It soon attracted a sizeable following from the city's burgeoning movie industry. Stars received fan mail addressed simply to: The Brown Derby Hollywood and Vine."

The Derby was remodeled for a new generation in the 1960's, closed in 1985, burned in 1988, and demolished in 1994. It's too bad it's no longer there for all to see.

Juicy JFK Mini Series

Katie Holmes will play Jackie Kennedy

Jackie Kennedy

Greg Kinnear to play John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy

Tom Wilkinson will play Joe Kennedy, Sr.

Joe Kennedy, Sr.

Barry Pepper will play Robert Kennedy

Robert Kennedy

Oooh, I'm soooo excited about the upcoming mini series The History Channel is doing about The Kennedy's. I've mentioned my feelings about America's Royal Family before, but can't wait to see if The History Channel really has the guts to tell the truth about the family's shady ways.

Casting for the series will be as follows: Katie Holmes will play Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy; Greg Kinnear will play John Kennedy; Barry Pepper will play Robert Kennedy; Tom Wilkinson will play Joe Kennedy, Sr. Seems like a great cast. I wonder who will play Marilyn?

The eight hour series will begin in 2011. "The series will focus on the Kennedy family, long dubbed America's own Camelot - a story that ended in tragedy for John and Robert, when the two brothers were killed in separate assassinations. Jacqueline went on to marry Greek millionaire Aristotle Onassis, earning the nickname "Jackie O."

The presence of executive producer Joel Surnow ("24"), a political conservative who joked in a 2007 New Yorker article that "conservatives are the new oppressed class" and criticized Democratic Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, has worried some critics as to the mini-series' accuracy, though the History Channel's release notes that the channel's "resident historians" are vetting the project."

I hope they don't try to hide the truth about the Kennedy's once again. It's been long enough. The secrets are already out there and exposed. How am I supposed to wait until next year???

Raquel Welch

Raquel Welch is one of the most beautiful women alive. In my opinion, anyway. I can't believe how gorgeous she still is. It was funny to me though, that when I tried to find some vintage photos of her, she was always in a bathing suit. I guess use it while you've got it huh? Enjoy!

New Blog Look...

I've changed the blog again. I updated the background, header, etc. Tell me what you think.

I haven't much too say lately. I will be back on track next week I promise. Still feeling a little under the weather.

In the meantime, I finally finished Stephen King's Under the Dome and have to say it was absolutely terrible. I was so disappointed that I spent 2 months reading those 800 pages. I just didn't get it. Did you read it? What did you think? Hope you have a great day friends!

Hef Has Saved the Day...

Well, call him what you will, but Hugh Hefner graciously donated the last $900,000 needed to save the famed Hollywood sign. Check out the article below:

"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner on Monday donated the last $900,000 sought by a conservation group for a land purchase needed to save the famed vista of the Hollywood sign from being spoiled by development.

Hefner's key role in reaching the group's fund-raising goal was announced by Los Angeles city officials, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the San Francisco-based Trust for Public Land at a news conference in the Hollywood Hills.

The land trust needed to collect a total of $12.5 million by this Friday under a deal with a group of Chicago investors who bought the 1,820-foot (555-meter) ridge, called Cahuenga Peak, from the estate of billionaire Howard Hughes in 2002.

The trust will now purchase the 138-acre (56-hectare) adjacent parcel and turn it over to the city to be incorporated into the surrounding Griffith Park, preventing any construction that would mar the postcard-perfect view of the Hollywood sign nearby.

"My childhood dreams and fantasies came from the movies, and the images created in Hollywood had a major influence on my life and Playboy," Hefner said in a statement. "As I've said before, the Hollywood sign is Hollywood's Eiffel Tower and I'm pleased to help preserve such an important cultural landmark."

Other private donors to the Hollywood sign preservation effort included actor Tom Hanks and director Steven Spielberg, the land trust said."

I was worried about this landmark being destroyed some months ago...it is wonderful to know it will be around for my children's children to see.

Have a great day!

60's Hippies

I don't usually focus on the 60's or even hippies, but came across some great images of those who were considered a little more "free" during this time. Check out the one of Led Zepplin. Wow Robert Plant!

(I've been really sick for the past 4 days, so I haven't had time to post. I'll be back this week!)

1940's Vintage Pics Part II

I came across some more great 40's photos. I love the one of Cary Grant. What do you think of the girl scouts? Or the teenagers in the convertible? Wow, things seemed so much simpler. Have a great day!

(Oh, as a side note. I'm trying to post everyday, but am sooooo behind on comments until I get out of school. Please bear with me and continue to comment. They truly make my day!)

Footloose

I saw something in the news today that made me smile. The movie "Footloose" was based on a true story of teenagers in a small Oklahoma town. The teens, now adults 30 years later, got together last weekend to celebrate their victory in overturning the town's dancing law. How great is that?

Here are some fun facts about the film and some pics to go along with them. I love this movie and so badly wanted to date Kevin Bacon. What did you think?

--Michael Cimino was originally hired as director. He was fired when he asked for a $250,000 advance for re-writing the entire screenplay prior to shooting. (The movie's total budget was only $7.5 million.)

--The scenes where Chris Penn's character had to learn how to dance were added to the script because Penn really could not dance.

--Christopher Atkins was originally signed to play Ren MacCormack.

--The movie was loosely based on events that took place in the tiny, rural Oklahoma farming community of Elmore City.

--In the liner notes for the re-released "Footloose" soundtrack (1999), there's a brief introduction by Kenny Loggins which mentions that the script for the film was loosely based on actual events which tranpired in the young life of his long time friend, and "Footloose" screen writer, Dean Pitchford.

--With the Principal's knowledge, 24-year-old Kevin Bacon attended the Payson Utah High School as "Ren McCormack", a transfer student from Phili to get into his role. With his narrow tie and new-wave haircut, he was treated pretty much like in the film. Bacon gratefully left with the location scouts on the afternoon of the first day.

--Dianne Wiest, who plays Ariel's mom, Vi, is only 9 years older than Lori Singer (Ariel).

--Kevin Bacon broke out in hives around his midsection when he had to film the City Council scene where he makes the case for holding a prom dance. The actor says he is uncomfortable when speaking in public, but has never had a reoccurrence of hives.

--Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe were both slated to play the lead. The casting directors were impressed with Cruise because of the famous underwear dance sequence in Risky Business (1983), but he was unavailable for the part because he was filming All the Right Moves (1983). Lowe auditioned three times and had dancing ability and the "neutral teen" look that the director wanted, but he pulled his knee, and the injury prevented him from taking the part. After watching Diner (1982), the director had to convince the producers to go with Kevin Bacon.

--John Lithgow filmed scenes for Terms of Endearment (1983) while on a break from shooting this film.

--The character of "Willard" (not even called by that name in the original script) was specifically rewritten by author Dean Pitchford with Chris Penn in mind.

--Kevin Bacon was offered the leading role for the Stephen King movie Christine (1983), at the same time that he was asked to do a screen test for "Footloose". The producers had to convince Bacon that turning down a sure role in "Christine" for a part he might not even get in "Footloose" was the wiser choice. The producers told him that if he got the part for "Footloose," the role would make him a star. 30 seconds into the screen test, Bacon was offered the part.

--Daryl Hannah turned down the offer to play Ariel in order to play Madison in Splash (1984). Elizabeth McGovern turned down the role of Ariel in order to play Deborah Gelly in Once Upon a Time in America (1984). Melanie Griffith, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rosanna Arquette, Meg Tilly, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Heather Locklear, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jodie Foster, Phoebe Cates, Tatum O'Neal, Bridget Fonda, Lori Loughlin, Diane Lane and Brooke Shields were all offered the role of Ariel, but turned it down.

--John Travolta was offered the role of Ren, but turned it down.

--The dancing feet in the opening credit sequence contained many of the cast and crew. Over 150 different pairs of feet were shot. The dancer with the gold shoes was actually Kenny Loggins.
