Hello all! Happy "hump" and "St. Patrick's Day" to ya! I forgot to wear green as usual, so let's hope I don't get pinched lol. I have created a new blog for my 11th graders called "What Gatsby?" I would love for you to check it out! Please give me any feedback you can. I will be using it as a tool to help them through the novel, but would love you to join too! Oh, before I forget again, here is the article I had mentioned before that mentions the work of a professor who has argued that perhaps Gatsby was African-American. Definitely an original take on the novel...

Oh, and here's a quick ref to the passage I was mentioning my first year college students latched onto and would not let me dismiss, due to its possible suggestion that the narrator's sexuality, and certainly his reliability might be questionable (I had one student obsess how Nick's name reflects his imperfect perception...the "nicks" or flaws in his neutrality. Won't go on and on, but I know the scene in the library with Owl Eyes looking at the books also had them talking and wondering what it all meant.....
The Nick passage....
In chapter 2, he goes down the elevator with Mr McKee:
'Come to lunch some day,' he suggested, as we groaned down the elevator.
'Where?'
'Anywhere.'
'Keep your hands off the lever,' snapped the elevator boy.
'I beg your pardon,' said Mr McKee with dignity, 'I didn't know I was touching it.'
'All right,' I agreed, 'I'll be glad to.'
...I was standing beside his bed and he was sitting up between the sheets, clad in his underwear, with a great portfolio in his hands.
'Beauty and the Beast...Loneliness...Old Grocery Horse...Brook'n Bridge...'
Then I was lying half asleep in the lower level of the Pennsylvania Station, staring at the morning Tribune, and waiting for the four o'clock train.
