Nature...

Am I becoming some type of transcendentalist or something? I have developed this great sense of appreciation for nature since being in Ohio. I'm amazed at the vast amount of green trees and blue skies that are here. My brother keeps talking about moving to Montana, which I believe is truly God's country. If I have this type of appreciation for Ohio, what would I think about Montana? Well, anyway, here are some pictures of nature that I thought were beautiful. Check out all God has created.

Moundsville Penitentiary

This past Sunday, my brother, sister-in-law and I visited yet another supposed haunted prison. We took a trip out to Moundsville, West Virginia to visit the Moundsville Penitentiary. This place is seriously creepy. I didn't find it as aesthetically pleasing as Mansfield, but it was definitely an experience to see it.

There were 85 hangings and 9 executions by electric chair here. The place had a terrible vibe. My sister-in-law actually started to feel a little nauseous at times. There were around 900 people in all who died here. If you get a chance to visit, you should. In the meantime, here are some photos and a video from Ghost Adventures when they visited the prison. Hope you are having a great hump day! If you want to check out their website, visit Moundsville Penitentiary online.

Blue Suede Shoes Gone Forever...

Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. I found a great article on Yahoo News and thought I would share it with you. Here are some little known facts about Elvis and his career. Where would we be without his music?

--According to Robert Sillerman, former CEO of the company that owns 85% of Elvis Presley Enterprises, there are more than 84,000 performers whose principal occupation is impersonating Elvis.

--"Elvis" was the middle name of Vernon Presley, Elvis's father

--Despite being the "King of Rock And Roll," Elvis never received Grammy recognition for any of his signature rock hits. He did win three Grammy awards over his career, but they were all for gospel recordings. He did, however, receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1971.

--Elvis played bass on his 1957 hit, "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care."

--Elvis never performed live outside of the United States, save five Canadian shows in 1957.

--After leaving the Army, Elvis made his first post-military appearance in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was a benefit concert in which all proceeds went to the USS Arizona Memorial building fund, honoring American sailors killed in the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

--Elvis's friends noted that he loved pepper on his eggs--in fact, he often poured so much pepper on his omelet that it appeared black.

--Everyone knows about Elvis's iconic 1956 pink Cadillac. But did you know he also owned a nearly identical model in purple? Both cars are on display at the Graceland Museum.

--Comedian Johnny Carson once quipped, "If life was fair, Elvis would still be alive and all the impersonators dead."

--Larry Geller was responsible for styling Elvis's hair for the sad occasion of his funeral. When setting about his task, he was startled to find that Elvis had half an inch of white-colored regrowth under his dyed black hair. Geller quickly improvised a touch-up job using a black mascara wand.

Priscilla

Well, I've decided to stay in Ohio til the 24th, so I am officially on vacation for a month! I love it! So excited to be here with my brother and sister-in-law. We've been having a great time, playing lots of board games, etc.! As you know, I'm reading the Elvis book and am looking back at some history. I found some pictures of Priscilla that I thought were interesting, so here you go. What did you think of her and Elvis as a couple?

Bonanza

As you know, I'm staying with my brother and sister-in-law in Ohio (still haven't left yet). We've been talking a lot about Bonanza, the old t.v. show. My brother watches it every day, and I reminded him that our Papa used to love that show. Here's some fun trivia about the show and some pics to go along with it. Also want to wish my dad a happy 57th birthday today. I love you dad!

--In the show's early episodes, the writers would typically have the Cartwrights being hostile to visitors to their property. Lorne Greene objected to this pointing out that with the Ponderosa being as large as it is, the Cartwrights would be an important business interest in the community. Thus visitors would naturally come for economic and political reasons as well as social ones and the Cartwrights would logically welcome them as such. The producers agreed and altered the premise of the characters accordingly.

--During the first season of the show, the guest stars were paid far more than the stars of the show because the producers didn't think that the stars were well-known enough to pull in viewers.

--When Dan Blocker died unexpectedly shortly before filming began for the final season, it was decided to have Hoss die too by having him killed in an accident. The opening episode, a two-hour special in which Little Joe marries only to see his bride die, was originally scripted to feature Hoss.

--When Pernell Roberts left the show, his character Adam was written off by having him move to Australia.

--The three sons are half brothers. Adam's mother was from Boston, Hoss' was from Sweden and Little Joe's was from New Orleans.

--Most viewers have only heard the famous theme song by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans played as an instrumental. The theme song actually had lyrics and there is footage of the lead actors singing those lyrics.

--The character Ben Cartwright is a New Englander who had been a seaman. Before setting out West with his young son Adam, the widower Ben had been a ship's chandler, running a shop supplying gear to merchant vessels. (This past is referred to in several episodes, but most significantly, "Elizabeth, My Love" broadcast during the second season on May 27, 1961, when an older Ben is remembering Adam's late mother, his first wife.)

--This was the first US Western television show to have all its episodes filmed in color.

--During the filming of one episode, Lorne Greene was required to jump off a small ledge into a lake five feet below. Michael Landon later recalled that when Greene did the stunt, he jumped into the water feet first and went completely under, but his hair piece came off and floated on the surface of the lake. Landon and the rest of the crew watched to see what would happen. After a short while, Greene's hand shot up out of the water, grabbed the hairpiece, and pulled it down. Greene emerged from the lake, wearing his hairpiece slightly askew. He walked nonchalantly past the snickering crew, and went into his trailer without saying a word.

--Lasting 14 seasons, it is among the longest running Western television series (second behind "Gunsmoke" (1955)) and continues to air in syndication.

--A recurring situation (which also occurs in the TV western The Big Valley), was that every time one of the Cartwrights became seriously involved with a woman, she died from a malady, was slain, or left with someone else.

--In the real Virginia City, Nevada, the actual ranch used for the Ponderosa on location shoots is now a tourist attraction.

Elvis

I'm reading Baby Let's Play House right now and it is fascinating. I know I always say that, but I am learning so much about Elvis's background that I never knew. Here are some yummy photos of him to brighten up your day. Anything you want to share about your week?

Zoar

Went to this amazing village today called Zoar. It was the cutest thing. They had their annual Harvest Festival and it was great. Zoar was a German town outside of Canton, OH. The population was around 300 at its highest. The town was a very important one, as McKinley sometimes held meetings there. Here are some pics of the fabulous place.

RIP Marilyn

Today marks the 48th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death. To this day, we don't know the exact circumstances surrounding her mysterious exit from our world. Was it suicide? Overdose? Murder? There are so many theories and many of us will never know the truth. In the meantime, here are some pics of gorgeous Marilyn to remember her.
